This Monday (21/09), after seven days of intense debates, the 8th Red Sudamericana de Danza Meeting came to an end. Produced in partnership with the 1st International Dance Platform (PID), the event brought together researchers and artists from 16 different countries, besides many Brazilians.

The last day was reserved for an evaluation and projection of the activities of Red, which celebrates 10 years in 2010, besides an evaluation of the meeting itself. “I think Red is even more important today, the doors are more open. And the annual meetings have a great influence in this, every year the role of Red becomes more clear”, assessed choreographer and performer Marcelo Evelin. He took the opportunity to propose an idea for the next meetings: “The idea of artistic exchange also interests me. I think we could discuss the pieces presented during the meeting. How could we do that?”

For Mexican researcher Javier Contreras, Red’s role is to centralize the dance produced in all of Latin America. “There´s a separation between Mexico and Latin America, but also a regional affection. I had a very idealized idea of the region until I got into Red and realized there are many encounters, but also misunderstandings. It is enriching to know there is another one moving differently. Nowadays I can´t imagine myself without Red”, he said.

One of the current managers of RSD, Natacha Melo draws attention to the changes that took place in Red and in the world in the last ten years. “We have to think that the regional context changed a lot, the discourses changed, we must update ourselves, now we have channels, information, technology, content… I feel we haven´t taken ‘the’ leap yet. We shouldn´t be afraid of destroying some things in order to build others”.

From these evaluations, the participants set up some goals for 2010. Among the projects that will continue to be carried out are Lazos and Red en movimiento (workshops). Red’s plans also include a documentary celebrating 10 years of activities, a project in partnership with photographer Manuel Vason, the creation of a management group divided into four ‘responsibilities’ (management, financing, communication and institutional relations).

Meeting resulted in a unique document for the Latin America

One of the main subjects discussed this year, dance education in Latin America was the most developed topic of the debates. It originated a unique document that gathers considerations and common recommendations to all countries in Latin America and the Caribbean regarding artistic training and practice in the formal and informal areas of dance. A first action extended to the virtual world, the declaration is available for suggestions at movimento.org. Click here to read it (in Spanish and Portuguese only).

The 8th Red Sudamericana de Danza Meeting was the first one that took place after the creation of the social network movimiento.org – in partnership with idança – and from now on it will be possible to assess the importance of the new tool. “We´ll see if the debates will continue, if everyone understand the importance of this tool. The meeting is the space of trust, but there´s a need for a complement between them. A year from now we´ll see the combination of both”, Natacha expects.
