Marcela Levi, performer and choreographer from Rio de Janeiro, premieres her first duo this Thursday (19/11) in Rio de Janeiro. Those who know her work will see there are some significant changes in Em redor do buraco, tudo é beira. Marcela, who has always worked with solos in continuity, now explores emptiness and non-linear narrative. “It´s my first duo and I wanted to work with potent and autonomous actions, without thinking about linear narrative. My bet is that our conversation takes place in absence. We are two on stage, but we only dance together in one moment”, explains the artist, who shares the stage with Flávia Meireles.
The emptiness and instability she talks about are also present in the name of the show: the hole refers to emptiness and the borderline, to the unstable and incomplete situation.
The process of Em redor do buraco, tudo é beira started about two years ago, when the artist was in Spain taking part in an artistic residency, invited by the program Artistas en Residencia – La Casa Encendida and Universidad de Alcalá de Henares (Madri). There, she realized that her role was that of provocateur. “From that point on, Flávia got into the process, I proposed improvisations, she kept bringing me material and I reworked it. We created a dialogue inside and outside the stage. Today I feel my vocabulary is richer because I used someone else’s story”.
Besides the collaboration with Flávia, Marcela also counted on the dramaturgic collaboration of visual artist Laura Erber. “Laura followed the rehearsals, brought me books, filled my imagination. It was also a kind of dialogue”, says Marcela. Among the references that appear in the piece, there are David Lynch’s Eraserhead, Alice, a Czech version of Alice in wonderland, Bonde do Tigrão’s funk song Morto, vivo and mainly Maurice Blanchot’s book Conversa infinita. “These references appear in a direct and in an indirect way. All of them somehow helped me to explore the idea of death, violence, in a body that moves non-stop.”
Em redor do buraco, tudo é beira is running in the mezzanine of Espaço SESC until November 29. From Thursday to Sunday, at 20h; Fridays and Saturdays, at 21h30.
