January feels like vacations – at least in the Southern hemisphere. Those who have kids take the opportunity of school vacations to travel, but beyond that, many people choose the first month of the calendar to organize life or just to do nothing. With dance professionals it´s not different. Many choose the beginning of the year for a well-deserved rest.

But, between a dive into the ocean and afternoon naps in the couch, it´s a good idea to stay alert, because 2010 starts off full of national and international call for entries. Festivals, showcases and grant programs with submissions open during the whole month of January. Idança made a list of open call for entries with deadlines in January, so no one gets lost with so many dates.

Among the international opportunities is the 3rd edition of Ciudanza – Danza em Paisajes Urbanos, a festival that takes place in March, in different public spaces of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Those interested in submitting must propose a piece specifically for the spaces where the festival will happen (the complete regulation is available here. The deadline is January 15th and the result will be announced on January 22nd.

In its first autonomous edition – previously, it had been held within a contemporary dance festival – Festival Internacional de Videodanza Cuerpo Digital, in Bolivia, is receiving submissions until April 1st. Besides videodance, performance and installations dealing with the relationship between body and technology may also participate. The list of selected works will be announced on April 30th. Festivals extend deadlines

In México, agite y sirva – 2º festival itinerante de videodanza extended the deadline until January 12th – the previous date was December 22nd. The result will still be announced on February 10th. Find out how to submithere.

Another festival that extended its deadline was In Vitro, which will take place for the first time in Cuenca, Equador, in April. The submissions are open until January 31st. It is necessary to send a video of the piece, as well as a history of the company. Read more here.

The Brazilian Culture Ministry will finance projects for debates and publications

Among the national call for entries is the Culture Ministry’s Cultura e Pensamento (“Culture and Thinking”) program, which will award debate and magazine publication projects from all over Brazil. With submissions open until January 17th, the program will distribute R$1 million to projects that stimulate critical debate through meeting or publications. The regulations and application form are available here.

Another financing opportunity comes from Instituto Itaú Cultural. In the 5th edition of Emoção Art.ficial (“Art.ficial Emotion”), Art and Technology Biennial, the institution will select projects that can be financed and exposed. This is new comparing to previous years. With the theme Autonomy, artistic works relating to the concept of cyber art can participate. The deadline is February 1st and all the information necessary for the application can be found here. The exhibition will take place between June 30th and September 5th.

Among the national festivals and showcases that are starting their activities in January is Visões Urbanas – Festival Internacional de Dança em Paisagens Urbanas (“Urban Visions – Dance in Urban Landscapes International Festival”), whose 5th edition will take place between April 14th and 17th, in São Paulo. Also in São Paulo, Cia. Corpos Nômades summons all those interested in participating at the 3rd Mostra Lugar Nômade to send their projects until January 29th. The showcase will happen during the first weeks of March. The information about the submission is available at company’s website.
