Sempre ouvi falar, mas nunca li! | Always heard about it, but never read!

* Paulo Paixão é doutorando do Programa de Comunicação e Semiótica da PUC-SP e Professor da Escola de Teatro e Dança da UFPA.After 12 years waiting, by initiative of the FID (Forum International de Dança) in its new cultural action – FID-Editorial -, has been released One, Two, Three. The dance is the body’s thought, by Helena Katz. This publication is the first in a trilogy devoted to the transit between art and science, formed by three dance thesis defended at PUC-SP: the ones from doctorates Helena Katz, Dulce Aquino and Fabiana Britto. This initiative is also born as an political act against the state of siege that contemporary dance is in our country, abandoned to the absolutism of the incentive laws that delegate the decision of which cultural product to support with public money to marketing executives in the private companies. The FID initiative creates an alternative action by editing the books at cost price, distributing through networks and personal relations, without association to any law and, therefore, printing on its pages no private trademark.

If the initiative gets the expected dimension, it could also call the attention of the publishing market to the fact of that dance also sells books and that the difficulty level found in an academic text is no obstacle for its commercialization. To make possible such strategy, a site was idealized and is on line at www.semlei.com.br, where anyone can know more about the FID initiative, future projects and how to buy the books.

One, Two, Three. The dance is the body’s thought offers three independent reading axes, not sequential but correlated: perception, knowledge and evolution. Writing in 1993, this doctorate thesis can be considered as the nascent of a new investigative field in dance studies in our country. This beginning of the journey came to the Corpomídia (body media) theory, that the author is developing in academic partnership with Christine Greiner.

Dangerous and audacious task that approaches the scientific knowledge to art knowledge, it can from a far, be seem as a positivist attempt (type of philosophy that praises as solely valid the admission of knowledge based on facts and data of the experience). However, the author, using freedom and rigor, welcomes in the dance discourse and ideas the assessments that had revolutionized the world, elaborated by the physics in the last centuries: the work of Maxwell (1831-1879) with the electromagnetic fields; the experiment of Michelson-Morley and the discovery of the radioactivity of Becquerel; the isolation of the phenomenon of quantum by Max Planck (1858-1947); the two Theories of Relativity: Special and the Generality for Einstein; the formularization of the quantum; the principle of the complementarity presented by Niels Henryk Bohr (1885-1962); the principle of the indecidibility of Kurt Gödel (1906-1978) and the uncertainty by the physicist Werner Heisenberg (1901-1976).

Such epistemology tries to question the assumption of dance as an universal corporal language, shared by human beings who elaborate internal contents intrinsic to any one of us. An effort against the search for a basic alphabet in an objective body that expresses the golden immaterial that we have inside. And a proposition for a dance that belongs to a world living between the laws/events. Law as continuity, way of intelligibility, as code. And event, because everything that happens brings something of arbitrary, with discontinuities and probabilities. The biggest effort is to precise the concepts, against the “ithinks” (from the work of Karl Popper between 1934 and 1959, it is clear that all theory must specify the parameters where it can be applied and the criteria according to which can potentially be refuted). The semiotics created for Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) leads the inquiry in the book, and some knowledge coming from contemporary physics, cognitive sciences and the neo-evolutionist theory enter as empirical data, strengthening the ideas for the elaboration of a general theory on the laws that conduct the creation, configuration, representation, interpretation, critical reading of dance. It is not about a sole theory, complete and exclusive of any other, but a possibility so that the thinking on dance, as well as its action, follow the paradigmatic changes that had happen in other fields of knowledge.

The concepts of sign representation of object and semiose, in Pierce, are the first ones to be worked. They appear to clarify that all reading on world is partial, incomplete, and implies who is observing in what is observed. Such reading alone represents the world, in the peircian direction, and it does not substitute it in its whole. This question excites, in Helena’s text, a visit to the history of the scientific-philosophical quarrel on the relation between parts and all, in the understanding of the phenomena of life. One has accepted that each way to exist if justified for its special intrinsic characteristic, its beddings. The author repaves the way that leads to a perspective of procedural reading on the world, going beyond the descriptions of its elements.

Presenting the friction between the mobile and static as what emerges the notion of process, that makes unstable the ideas of cause and effect mechanics, a space for other ideas is opened: concurrence, instability, chaos, inside an understood universe as a flow of interactions and not of perpetual essences. By indicating that we are immersed in self-organizing processes, in open systems: indeterminate, vacant, general, the author concludes that our interpretations are produced from these same characteristics. It is then proposed that the task of theory is to undertake series of series of approaches of that which it theoritizes. It is from this understanding that the author identifies the importance to elaborate in the dance environment an universe that follows non determinists laws of what happens in a body, and moves through the precision of the biological apparatus and the imprecise physicist-cognitive starters in flows (action with intelligent marks) in agreement with the principles of incompleteness and inconsistency in Gödel.

The author explains that each movement, no matter how close relation of similarity it keeps with others from the description of its trajectory in the space, never will be the same. The apparent form of a dance step, for example, results of a settlement between ratios established for it, never an update of an ideal form. She justifies that by saying that the matrix that generate the movement is prior to the movement. The action requires a motor command that creates a space-time model of cellular drive. The relationship of our body with our mind depends, in one hand, on the bond between cerebral structure and processes and, in the other, on the relations between these processes and the events that succeed, where a series of readjustments operate during the passage. In the end of an action one event is generated as unique movement, not repeatable. Therefore, the movement results of a translation (of forms) that never ends and never does show itself as fully determined/finished (semiose). The conception of movement in the human brain is similar to the weaving of a non linear, chaotic web, without principle nor determinable definitive end. When the body moves, it is not more than the end of a chain that precedes it.

The question of the body’s communication with its environment is treated as consequence of the functionality of the organs related to senses. Such communication is described as an occurrence between qualities, through a process of modeling through its form of quality (the icon for Peirce). The movement that appears is already a result, that presents itself as a perception judgment, strengthens the author. The time relation between perception and action happens simultaneously and confuses who searches for origins and its meanings. Katz concludes by saying that the inaugural moment, at the same time, finishes the neuronal process that established it. While the brain carries through the perceptual translations, the body acts in similarity.

Even admitting the severity of mechanical laws in the establishment of events, we are warned that, inside the law itself, the unexpected sprouts as a possible deviation. Although the body can have a general description ? as offered by the einsteinium Alan Lightman: a collection of chemical elements, nervous fabrics and impulses ? nothing modifies the fact that each human being is an irreplaceable unique being. And this justifies the affirmation: we live in the duality between Heraclites (everything flows) and Parmenides (what it is, is).

In the knowledge discussion, the author arrives to the synthesis that presents knowledge as a way to investigate reality, occurring in continuity flows in an evolutive way. The knowledge becomes something that is getting defined as it is being done. While it is happening. It changes, because the accesses to its objects and the objects themselves also change. In this sense, each new description describes a new object. The tools implemented by man, as examples of knowledge, had not only created new kinds of people, but also a new way to observe reality.

Knowledge is presented as something that belongs to the future and that transforms everything it passes through, as a evolutive device that promotes modifications in the system, in the direction of an always increasing complexity. Such agreement inscribes the conscience in the temporality. Or either, the conscientious mind uses the past to carry through its future analyses. Therefore, the knowledge is not given by the introspection, nor by the intuition, but as Peirce says, through the generalization of the perceptive experience, perception being the entrance door for knowledge. In this same exact way, the dance knowledge is presented as evolutive operation in the body, in increasing level of complexity. The movement gives form to the body. Our gestures shape our skeleton and make possible the emerging of new functional models, making that the structural arrangement produces new properties, in successive chains. The ability to chain concepts and create new sequences of choices appears in the book as a possible distinction between our type of conscience and of the others found in nature.

The knowledge of the body itself evolves a lot in human history and in this work many dimensions of the evolutive process meet. Brushing the question of the dualism materialism/idealism, the author presents a synthesis between the two as an epistemological alternative. Although mental and physical states are not identical, because they are organized in different ways, both are constituted of the same elements: particles and energy.

The author also discusses apprehension of reality as a form of symbolic representation. Although the way laws are genetically programmed and activated through the intricate circuits of the brain has still not been deciphered, there are existing indications that representation happens internally by a set of neuronal activities (a map). The outside information generates a functioning standard and not recreation of the world, such as it is sensed by our senses. The symbol represents something by analogy and not by similarity, it evokes the referred object and does not duplicate it. Following with the ideas, Katz says then that the somato-sensorial cortical maps constitute themselves each new day. To each new training, the map modifies itself. Thus, the map of someone while training in ballet differs from the map of this same person when swimming.

This means that the chosen training implicates one’s definitive type of commitment. Or either, each technique corresponds to a definitive repertoire of movement. Depending on the choice, the body will be qualified for certain set of performances and not for any others. To train is to construct cortical maps. Thus, we must connected, as narrowly as possible, the aesthetic ambition of a body to its action of technical training. Many still wrongly talk about ballet being the base of all dances, concludes Katz.

The evolution can be characterized as life’s operative way and follows two basic routes. Some elements are added in a process commanded by permanence, and they result in a system. They cover an entire hierarchy to reach organization. From there, they take the opposite direction, degrading themselves until the death. The cycle always recommences for the element. The author alerts us for the fact that we do not know the precise moment where the element associates itself with others and establishes a way of consequent organization on this relationship.

The fluctuations are responsible for the modification on a system’s state. They are deviating lines in the average values and become crucial when approaching instabilities. The origin of life itself implies in sequences of successive instabilities. When we look at the universe as a whole, we can think about the second law of the thermodynamics and count on the entropy growth, concomitant with the local organization. In the world, the generic is dissipation and the local has organization.

The author indicates a parallel between the evolutive process and the installation of dance in a body. It would always be born from the association of few elements that relate with the others and little by little, gets to configure itself as a complex system always subject to variations. Each work of dance when installing itself in a body, in this sense, is subjected to adaptation, for natural selection and variation. Its complex configuration tries to follow rigorous parameters in accordance with the biggest number of possible references, but is always subjected to deviations promoted by variations. It transits between the qualities, possibilities (icon); the movement already installed in its instantaneous materiality (index); and the regularity that emerges from the succession of successive acts, its relation as property, law (symbol). As product of perception, of knowledge, subjected to an evolutive mechanism, the dance is presented as the body’s thought. We do not recommend the trivial understanding of thought as being rationality that opposes to emotions and feelings. Thought here is used to assign a way to organize information – an action moved by an intention, therefore, not what comes after the action.

For the author, dance can be considered the body’s thought because of the complexity level how it organizes itself in a body. Its action in a body resembles the action that makes a thought appear, in a fiscalized logic. In a body that dances, the author says, the dance starts by ignition that then transform into motor hypotheses that will be run through the body and result in dance-thought. Thus, from the movement and perception produced by the body, in chain and in the form of thought, dance is born. The body copies tracks plastically, as the ones that produce thought, and for its structural similarity the author considers the dance as the thought of the body. When enunciating that, the emphasis again is on the reproduction of neuronal plasticity of thought by the body muscles.

The dissemination of these ideas in last the 12 years, had a basic role in the current state of the Brazilian dance. Controversial and extremely operative, Helena Katz not only became a reference in the theoretical studies, but also in the conduction of artistic creations in dance, in curatorial profiles, in the elaboration of political strategies, etc. Now, with the release of the book edition of her thesis, more readers can have direct access her ideas, know them better, and that can raise the level of the debate in the field.
