Bienal Internacional de Dança do Ceará is expanding its horizons and lands in Cape Verde on January 19. With 14 Brazilian shows and 11 local ones, the festival will take part of Ceará’s dance across the ocean.

This ‘branch’ of the Bienal, called Conexão Cabo Verde, will have five days of intense shows, workshops, courses, lectures and meetings program. The goal is to create a collaboration network with the country, strengthening collaborative creation processes. “Capeverdians are very present in the city of Fortaleza, at the Universities. We think it´s an important focus for the Bienal”, states David Linhares, general director of Bienal de Dança do Ceará.

Everything started as a dream of creating stronger artistic connections with countries in the Southern hemisphere, without having much interference from the Northern hemisphere. Adding to that, the creation of a direct Fortaleza-Praia (capital of Cape Verde) flight contributed a lot to the transformation of the project into Conexão Cabo Verde. After many conversations here in Brazil – during Bienal 2009 – and there, the idea took shape. “Raiz di Polon was here in Bienal and we had a first conversation about doing curatorship together. Afterwards I went to Praia and we had a lot of support from the government there. After six months the project was confirmed”, David remembers.

Besides the importance of the first big meeting, David highlights the fact that this will be the first international trip for many artists. The program gathers popular dance groups whose members never even left Ceará. Among the participants are Dona Zefinha, CEM – Centro de Experimentações em Movimentos, Cia. Vatá, Cia. Dita, Grupo Fuzuê, J. Garcia Cia. de Dança and others. The festival will also have a videodance workshop with Alexandre Veras and one about creation stimulus for movements and creative process with Silvia Moura, besides a lecture about public policies for dance with Leonel Brum.

“I´m very optimistic about the result. They love Brazil and the people of Ceará. And since there are many street presentations, I´m even afraid of the number of people that we can attract! We have to meet, to start thinking together, that´s urgent. I believe Conexão will be the first step to multiply this”, David celebrates.

A Bienal Internacional de Dança do Ceará atravessa o Oceano Atlântico e desembarca em Cabo Verde na próxima semana.
