Um encontro com a história viva da dança | An encounter with a living legend of dance
Em 1962, um recital apresentado na Judson Memorial Church de Nova York mudou o rumo da história da dança moderna para sempre. Ele reuniu nomes como Steve Paxton, Simone Forti, Trischa Brown, Deborah Ray, Lucinda Childs, Philip Corner e Yvonne Rainer, todos então integrantes do Dancers Group. Aquela noite, um 6 de julho, marcou o nascimento do Judson Dance Theatre, um dos mais originais e produtivos grupos de dança da época. Considerado um dos pioneiros fundadores da dança contemporânea, o Judson Dance Theatre existiu até 1964. Mas até hoje influencia artistas e companhias pelo mundo afora.
Um dos nomes que participou da história acima – e que ajudou a escrever uma parte da história da dança – Yvonne Rainer está no Brasil pela primeira vez. Para celebrar a visita, a coreógrafa, cineasta e escritora ganhou programação especial em São Paulo (leia mais aqui). Rainer desembarca no Rio de Janeiro na segunda-feira (20/07) e na terça-feira participa de evento no Espaço SESC, em Copacabana. Num encontro informal, ela falará sobre seu trabalho e sobre o papel fundador da Judson Church no movimento de dança e sobre as ideias contemporâneas que permeiam seu trabalho coreográfico hoje. Depois, suas bailarinas dançarão trechos de trabalhos atuais e da década de 60.
“O legado mais importante do Judson Dance Theatre é a forma como as pessoas utilizam hoje movimentos cotidianos na dança, a forma como a dança moderna se apropriou de gestos do dia-a-dia nas suas criações. A primeira vez que vi Martha Graham fazendo isso nos anos 50 fiquei surpresa. Hoje há um hibridismo de tudo”, acredita Rainer, em entrevista por telefone ao idança.
É a primeira vez que a artista viaja pela América Latina, mas seu roteiro inclui apenas o Brasil. “Não conheço nada da dança contemporânea brasileira, mas tenho curiosidade. Tenho uma bailarina brasileira que trabalha comigo há muito tempo (a bailarina Patrícia Hungria Hoffbauer) e vejo que ela tem um trabalho bastante político”, diz.
Além do importante papel nas experimentações do Judson Dance Theatre, Rainer também deixou sua marca no cinema e na literatura nos anos 70. Fez filmes com temáticas polêmicas para a época e em que fugiu à narrativa convencional, além de escrever livros, ensaios e até uma autobiografia. Hoje, ela dá aulas no Studio Art da Universidade da Califórnia.
Mais de 40 anos depois das transformações na forma de fazer dança provocadas pelo Judson Dance Theatre, Rainer acredita que algumas peças continuam provocativas: “algumas continuam me surpreendendo”. Sobre a produção atual, ela diz: “Não tenho acompanhado tudo o que vem sendo produzido, mas o trabalho do John Jasperse é original. Os jovens precisam começar a conhecer melhor seus corpos. Muito já foi feito. Como dizia o John Cage, ‘não há nada novo abaixo do sol’. Não adianta tentar reinventar a roda”, aconselha.

In 1962, a recital at Judson Memorial Church, in New York City, changed the history of modern dance forever. It brought together names like Steve Paxton, Simone Forti, Trischa Brown, Deborah Ray, Lucinda Childs, Philip Corner and Yvonne Rainer, when all of them were members of Dancers Group. That evening, on July 6, marked the birth of Judson Dance Theater, one of the most original and productive dance groups at the time. Considered to be one of the pioneer founders of contemporary dance, Judson Dance Theater existed until 1964. But to this day, it still influences artists and companies around the world.
One of the names that were part of the history above – and helped write a chapter of dance history – Yvonne Rainer is in Brazil for the first time. To celebrate the visit, the choreographer, filmmaker and writer was honored with a special program in São Paulo. Rainer lands in Rio de Janeiro on Monday (20/07) and on Tuesday she will participate in an event in Espaço SESC, in Copacabana. In an informal meeting, she will talk about her work and about the pioneer role of Judson Church in dance movement and the contemporary ideas that permeate her choreographic work nowadays. Afterwards, her dancers will perform parts of her current works and works from the 60’s
“Judson Dance Theater’s most important legacy is the way ordinary movements are used in dance today, the way modern dance uses everyday gestures in its creations. The first time I saw Martha Graham doing it in the 50’s I was surprised. Nowadays, there´s hybridism everywhere”, says Rainer, in a telephone interview for idança.
This is the first time the artist travels to Latin America, but her itinerary included Brazil only. “I don´t know anything about Brazilian contemporary dance, but I´m curious. I have a Brazilian dancer who has worked with me for a long time (dancer Patrícia Hungria Hoffbauer) and I see she has a very political work”, she says.
Besides having an important role in Judson Dance Theater’s experiments, Rainer also left her mark in film and in literature in the 70’s. She made movies with controversial subject matter and that escaped from conventional narrative, besides writing books, essays and even an autobiography. She currently teaches at Studio Art in the University of California.
Over 40 years after the transformations in dance making brought by Judson Dance Theater, Rainer believes that some pieces are still provocative, she says: “some continue to surprise me”. About the current dance production she says: “I don´t follow everything that is being produced, but John Jasperse’s work is original. Young people must start to know more about their own bodies. A lot has been accomplished. Like John Cage used to say, ‘there’s nothing new under the sun’. There no point in trying to reinvent the wheel”, she advises.
